About “Kukui”

January 18, 2010

This website sprouted out of one thing: the love for an art.

We became first-time parents in January of 2009.  We were your typical first-time parents: everything that our little Kaniela did was the cutest thing EVER!  We wanted to remember all those special moments we had with our son, and just wished that we could capture all of them.

That’s where photography and design came in.  We realized that we could use two of our favorite hobbies to do just that.  That is the art that we speak of: the art of making memories tangible.

We won’t ever claim to be spectacular photographers or designers, but we will always claim to love what we do, and to treat every photo shoot or project that we do for a friend, family member or client as if we were capturing each  moment of Kaniela’s life.

We feel privileged to live in Utah Valley where we are just a drive away from mountains, lakes, rivers, and so many other beautiful backdrops for photography.

Why “Kukui”?  “Kukui” is the name that the Hawaiian people use for the “candlenut” tree.  Among it’s many uses, it was used for three important things:

1. It was a light giving source.  The extracted oil, as well as the nut itself were used to give light.

2. It was used for art and design.  The ancient Hawaiians would grind the nut to create a type of dye that was used to design “kapa” cloth.

3. It was used for preservation.  The oils were used to preserve valued items.

Those three things pretty much sum up what we do.  Light for photography.  Art for design.  Preservation for capturing those special moments.

On this blog you’ll see photos from shoots we’ve done with clients, friends, family, and even things from our everyday life.  We hope you enjoy our work, and we would appreciate any comments that you may have.
